After listening to records by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and jazzmen playing on the Mississippi River steamships that docked along the edge of the city, he became, in the parlance of Carmichaels memoirs, a fullblown jazz maniac, and he took up the cornet, an instrument very similar to the trumpet, but with differently constructed tubing that makes for a mellower sound. Easily bored, unable to stick with school or a 9 5 job, Beiderbecke threw everything into his music.
